What if I told you that there are a million different versions of you on this planet right now? Would you believe me?
Consider this: every individual you encounter holds a perspective of you. To some, like your friends and family, you might be seen as a beautiful soul, whereas one of your classmates might see you as a stuck-up snob. Even the passing stranger on the sidewalk forms an opinion of you based on what you’re wearing and how you carry yourself.
I remember having a conversation with one of my coworkers who told me that they were surprised by how talkative I was because they had only ever seen me reading books in the corner and thought that I was shy. I laughed and told them I am shy but that it takes me time to warm up to people. But in that one interaction we had together, it changed their perspective of who I was as a person. If I hadn’t said anything they may still believe me to be extroverted instead of introverted.
Have you ever had a crush on someone, only to be surprised when you learn that they weren’t the person you thought they were? In your head they would change for you, only for you to find out that was their schtick. Or maybe you heard a story about how they made someone cry? Suddenly, the person you created in your mind contradicts the person you are hearing about. That’s because you created a version of them in your heard without really knowing them.
No one truly knows who you are. Not your significant other, not your parents, not even your best friend. They may have educated guesses, but no one can ever know you 100%. The only person who does is you.
And that’s kind of scary.
