Have you ever been reading a book only to find that one of the corners folded, or there is writing in the margins? For some, these might not be that annoying. For others, like me, it may be. Here are a few of my bookish pet peeves:
1. Movie Tie-in Covers: There’s nothing worse than falling in love with a book cover only to find it replaced by the movie version.
2. Dog-Eared Pages: Some may see them as bookmarks, but for us, they’re little creases of distress on otherwise pristine pages. Use a bookmark, people! (Or if you’re weird like me just remember what page you are on.)
3. Book Borrowers Who Don’t Return: You lend out a cherished book with high hopes of sharing its magic, only to have it disappear into the abyss of unreturned items.
4. Series with Inconsistent Cover Designs or Sizes: I have had it happen to me too many times where I have the entire series, but the last book is completely different than the rest. Arrrgghh – frustrating!
5. Hardcover with a Dust Jacket: I don’t really like hardcovers to begin with, but when I do have one, I don’t like a dustjacket. I take it off immediately if I am reading it because it slips and slides in my hands which then in turn causes the jacket to be creased or worn around the edges. And when I am finished reading, I have the added task of finding where I put the dang thing.
6. Stickers on Book Covers: Price stickers, “New Release” stickers, or barcodes that refuse to come off cleanly, leaving sticky residue behind. Or God forbid it has one of those permanent stickers on it that say, “Netflix Original”.
7. Book Series That Never End: Waiting anxiously for the next installment, only to discover the series has been indefinitely postponed or abandoned.
