Chapter 5:

Weeks had passed since Quentin last glimpsed Captain Elias at the deserted market, and the familiar rhythms of life in Marseille had settled over the town like a heavy shroud. Quentin seamlessly slipped back into his daily routine on the farm, finding peace in the simple asks that defined his mundane existence among the fields and animals.

Yet, Quentin found his thoughts often wandered back to the captain’s stories. As the days passed, Quentin found himself daydreaming about distant horizons, the call of the sea becoming stronger each day. He found himself seeking solace in sinking his feet into the stand, feeling the waves lap gently against his toes as he wriggled them in the mud.

One afternoon, as Quentin finished his chores bathed in the golden light of late afternoon, Lucy approached him with a basket full of freshly picked apples. “Quentin,” Lucy called out, her voice soft and melodic. “I thought you might like a snack.”

A warm smile spread across Quentin’s face as he turned to greet her. Her presence was a welcomed distraction from the monotony of his chores. “You didn’t have to,” he said gratefully, grabbing the apple from her outstretched hand. “Thank you.”

They sought refuge beneath the sprawling branches of the oak tree, where dappled sunlight danced through the leaves, casting a golden glow around them. Their conversation flowed effortlessly, punctuated by laughter and shared memories.
“Sometimes I wonder when you’re going to leave,” Lucy mused her gaze fixed on the horizon.

Quentin’s heart skipped a beat at her words, a tumult of emotions churning within him.

“Leave? Why would I ever leave?” Quentin countered, the words tumbling out in a rush.

Lucy turned to him, her expression softening. “Why would you stay?” she implored, her eyes searching his face for answers.

For a moment, Quentin’s resolve wavered, his gaze lingering on the horizon as he contemplated the weight of Lucy’s words. He thought about the time they stood together on the cliff overlooking the water, the breeze ruffling their hair. He was just a boy then, with dreams as big as the endless sea stretching before him. Lucy had stood beside him as they had talked about going on an adventure, of exploring the world together. Things had changed since then.

“Um, I… I guess I’ve never really thought about it…”

Lucy punched him gently in the shoulder knocking the thoughts from his head. “That’s the biggest lie I’ve ever heard,” she interjected. “You practically spend every day starting at the ocean.”

Quentin chuckled nervously, rubbing his shoulder. “Okay, uh…maybe I’ve thought about it a little,” he muttered, a sheepish grin crossing his face. He knew Lucy saw through his façade, understanding him in a way that few others could – a constant reminder of his own shortcomings. “And what about you, Lucy? Do you ever dream of leaving this place behind?”

“Of course I do,” Lucy replied, her gaze drifting to the horizon. “But for now, I’m content to stay right here with you, my dear dreamer.” She leaned back against him, nestling into the crook of his shoulder.

Quentin leaned his head against hers’, her hair tickling his cheek. Lucy had always been there for him, had followed him on their adventures into the woods, a constant comforting presence. But he knew that she deserved someone better than him, someone who would be as content as she was here.

“I’m sorry, Lucy,” Quentin said somberly. “I feel like I’m holding you back from your own dreams.”

She sat up quickly, nearly causing Quentin to tumble to the ground He caught himself with his arm before he faceplanted into the dirt. She turned to face him.

“You could never hold me back, Quentin,” she said, her gaze searching his face. She settled back against him. “If you did, I’d probably push you out of the way,” she added with a grin.

Quentin forced a smile to his face. Despite her lighthearted words, he couldn’t shake the weight of his own doubts. Despite the temptation of the distant horizons and uncharted seas danced tantalizingly he knew his responsibility lay in Marseille – with his mother, the farm, and Lucy.

“I don’t think I could ever leave,” Quentin confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. “there’s my mom to think about… she needs help around the farm.”

His gaze drifted to the fields stretching out before them, the verdant expanse a testament to generations of hard work and sacrifice. It was his family’s legacy, his duty to uphold. But even as Quentin embraced his role with a sense of duty, a small voice whispered in the depths of his soul, questioning whether his path truly was his own.

“And then there’s you.” Quentin’s voice trailed off, his gaze drifting to the fields stretching out before them.

“For a moment, I almost believed you,” she said with a sad smile. “I’m not the one keeping you here,” she said, squeezing his hand.

He felt his heart tighten in his chest. He loved Lucy, he had no doubt about that. She was his best friend. Yet, as he closed his eyes and savored the sweetness of her presence, he wondered if he could ever love her in the way she deserved – in a way that was more than simply platonic friendship. Perhaps with time, Quentin thought, he could learn to open his heart to her. Perhaps, with time, he could love her the way that she deserved to be loved.
